Desiderius Erasmus was a famous Renaissance humanist, theologian and philosopher who was born in Rotterdam, in 1467.
Following the 550th birthday of Erasmus, the Erasmus Committee had launched a competition was launched in 2015 for a monument to mark the birthplace of Erasmus.
The winning monument was unveiled on 28 October 2016, on the Grote Kerkplein, in Rotterdam.
It is a freestanding facade of the birth house, only 50 cm deep, with a portrait of the philosopher on it. The monument is completely made up of colorful Majolica tiles, nearly 1500 pieces of artwork. As you get closer, the portrait fades and Erasmus’s proverbs become visible on these tiles. The texts are shown in both Dutch and Latin.
Erasmus Monument is located right next to the Laurenskerk or Saint Lawrence Church.
