The Doopsgezinde Kerk or the Mennonite Community Church in Haarlem was built as a hidden church, designed by a Haarlem artist and painter, Jan de Bray (1627-1697), in the style of Dutch classicism, in 1683. The permit to build was granted by the city council on a condition that the church was not allowed to “hammer by the side of the road”, meaning not be seen or heard from the public road. Thus, the Doopsgezindekerk is rather concealed with no tower or bells. It is also known as the Grote Vermaning church.
