This Monnikendam (translation: Monks’ Dam) water gate was built around 1420 as part of Amersfoort’s second city wall from 1380-1451. The gate consists of two round towers connected by an arch over the water. It is located on the east side of the city center where the water from the Heiligenbergerbeek flows into the city.
Nowadays, the walls within Monnikendam is occupied by Restaurant de Monnikendam; an upscale restaurant offering private dining and location rental for corporate and wedding events. But you are free to walk around the gate and enjoy the surrounding greenery.
The Monnikendam is located 20 minutes walk away from Amersfoort train station and about 10 minutes from the city center.
