The HIV/AIDS Monument was unveiled on 1 December 2016 – World AIDS Day. This work of art Living by Numbers was designed by Jean-Michel Othoniel, an internationally well-known French artist. It features a giant abacus with scarlet beads made of hand blown glass which symbolizes counting down until AIDS has left our world and a long bench facing the water meant as a place and time for contemplation.
This is the first AIDS monument in Europe. It is located on the south bank of the river IJ, on De Ruyterkade, between the Amsterdam Centraal and the concert hall Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. About 10 minutes walk from Amsterdam train station.
