Brownies&downieS (not a typo!) is a special lunchroom founded in Veghel, Noord-Brabant province, in 2010. It was an idealism created by two friends, Teun Horck and Thijs Swinkels, combining good quality food and unique service of employees with intellectual disability. A notable franchise formula proving to be successful with more than 30 locations throughout the Netherlands.
The Brownies&downieS Haarlem opened its doors right here in the Schagchelstraat since October 2016. I like the idea that they are open as early as 9am. Every day!
The interior is retro chic filled with lots of warmth. It is like entering a spacious cozy community living room where everyone is welcome. There is even a small playing corner fantastic for toddlers and preschoolers.
Their breakfast menu is simple and it is all you need. From a single croissant with jam (€2.50) to a gracious breakfast platter for two with little bit of everything (€10.50 per person). How about a healthy Greek yogurt with muesli (€5.50) for yourself and a small stack of American pancakes (€4.50) for your little one? Eggs dishes are: three fried eggs, ham and cheese on a toasted bread called Uitsmijter (€6.75) or three scrambled eggs with bacon and cheese on two toasted bread called Roerei (€6.75). Vegetarian options are possible too.
My favorite morning menu is ‘Compleet Ontbijt’ (translation: complete breakfast). It consists of a croissant, white and brown bread, cold cuts of ham and cheese, one hard-boiled egg and a glass of fresh orange juice. A wonderful breakfast set, all for just €6.75!
Brownies&downieS is without a doubt, my favorite breakfast place in Haarlem. A great place to kick start my Monday morning when everything else is closed or to slow start my Sunday morning after a long hectic week. All your breakfast needs are dutifully served daily until 11am. Finish up your meal with additional coffee or tea (€2.30) and maybe a brownie (€3.00) too. You could make it a brunch!
Address: Schagchelstraat 26. 2011HZ Haarlem.
Opening Hours: Daily from 9am – 5pm.
