A chained-up bolder at the corner of Oudegracht 364 and the Eligenhof in Utrecht city center.42390215_2066102636773182_4108861806104018944_n1De Gesloten Steen or the Closed Stone when translated, is a heavy boulder national monumental stone, recorded since 1520. The so-called ‘schampsteen’ was probably used as a guard stone to prevent collision damage of wagon wheels against the building attached.
It was also called the Devil Stone! Story has it, the devil and his servant used to play with the stone at night and made a such hellish noise that caused the houses on the Oudegracht to shake. Finally a priest drove the devil away and put the boulder on chain. 😳

Which logical explanation do you believe?
Is this boulder really centuries old?
