It is ‘Olmenhorst Zelfpluk’ harvest time! Everyone is invited to Landgoed de Olmenhorst (Olmenhorst Estate) at Lisserbroek to pick their own delicious apples and pears.

This year, the ‘Olmenhorst Self Pick’ days are from 17 Sept – 30 Oct 2016. The apples and pears such as Elstar, Jonagold, Santana, Goudreinet, Doyenne du Comice, Conference and many more are all organically grown.
It is not possible to choose which type you like to pick. These orchards are located at different parts of the estate and depending on nature, only a section will be assigned for harvesting when the fruits are ripe.
Check website (Dutch) for specific. https://www.olmenhorst.nl/…/plukschemas-en-zelfpluktijden.h…

Admission is free. All you need to bring is a large bag or a big basket. Bring 2 if you are picking both apples and pears. Otherwise, plastic bags are available on site for 10 cents per piece.
When you are done, weigh your crops at the market stand and make your payment in cash. The price of these organic apples and pears are both at €1,95 per kilo only. So affordable!

Our visit was last Sunday. The apple of the day was Santana. Apparently it is Dutch, a cross between Elstar and Priscilla and it is suitable for most individuals with a mild apple allergy. Taste? It is sour with a kind touch. We love it!
The pear of the day was Conference. It is common in the Netherlands so no surprises there.

Kids tend to get carried away about finding that perfect apple or pear. We always end up with more kilos than intended. Imagine the possibilities: apple pie, apple sauce, dried apple, apple pancake, apple fondue, apple bread, apple juice, apple turnover, apple strudel, apple fritter, apple chip, apple muffin, apple beignet … 🙂

Landgoed Olmenhorst is 18ha filled with organic orchards, historic buildings, restaurant, huge playground, stores and market stalls. Best time to visit during this season is on the weekends. Extra activities lined-up for kids are puppet theatre (€3.50), archery (€2.00), pony ride (€2.00 per round) or horse-drawn carriage ride (€2.00 p.p.). There are also workshops to make candles, glass etching and wine tasting. Plenty of outdoor space to lay back and enjoy the day.

A perfect place for family day out for all generation. Repeat it annually!
PS: Tree adoption is possible.
