KEUKENHOF

Keukenhof (translation: kitchen garden) is known as the Garden of Europe. It is one of the world’s largest flower gardens located in Lisse, South Holland.

Keukenhof is open annually from mid-March to mid-May. This year, the opening dates are 24 March to 16 May 2016 from 0800hrs – 1930hrs.

According to the website, there are more than 7 million flower bulbs planted with a total of 800 varieties of tulips spreading over 32 hectares (79 acres).

I visited Keukenhof last Saturday. It was more than just a walk in a garden. There were inspirational gardens, flower show, sculpture exhibition, boat ride (additional charges), visit a windmill, live performances and three food trucks. Activities for the kids were petting farm, maze, treasure hunt and a couple of playgrounds.
The park has excellent access for wheelchairs and dogs are permitted provided that they are kept on a leash.

If you have never been to Keukenhof, you should visit at least once! Join the locals and tourists to check out what is the fuss all about. Experience beauty! It will be crowded throughout the day so be there early before noon for a better photo backdrop.

Admission prices (2016): Free of charge for 0-3 years of age, €8.00 for kids age 4-11 and €16.00 for everyone else. A park guide is available for €5.00. A guided tour is available daily free of charge at 1400hrs from Juliana Pavilion.

      • Thanks for correcting me. I had no idea that this exists. I have heard of cycling from Haarlem to Lisse to witness the tulip fields. Do you have any suggestions on this?

      • People do that. But I have allergies so this is something I would not do. I have no recommendation on companies. If you want to cycle yourself, there are many options; rent a bike do it yourself route or follow a tour group. Prices start from €15-€60. You should google Haarlem+cycling+flower+tour and see the choices. Averagely, it’s like a 4-6hr outing.

      • Thanks, I will do it myself if it not difficult and can be easily done. I guess doing it with companies is pricey. I understand if you have no recommendations. I suppose it is better option than the touristy Keukenhof flower garden?

      • Keukenhof is a manicured garden in a large scale. It is impressive. If you really like flowers, do it. Maybe bike rental company offers good discounted tickets? Consider that. Flower fields are private property. Be respectful treading in.

      • I do like flowers but I was wondering if it gets overwhelming after a point. I haven’t explored much for bike options yet but a lot of bloggers have mentioned that they have done so. I understand that these fields are private property, thanks for suggestion and reminder. Appreciate that. 🙂

      • Thanks for the help. This site didn’t open for me. I have two options. Option 1, reach Keukenhof and rent a bike near the garden entrance. Option2, rent a bike near Hillegom station. Any inputs?

      • Hillegom train station is within the bulb fields region. But it is quite deserted. Make sure you double check the pick up point for the bike. Renting bike at Keukenhof is a sure thing. If the flower fields are dissappointing, you can always enter the park.
