I had the idea that Museum of Bags and Purses would be interesting for my 10 year old daughter.
It was indeed! Surprisingly my 7 year old son was amused too.

Museum of Bags and Purses has 5000 pieces of bags, pouches, clutches, suitcases, trunks, purses, wallets and matching accessories.
All these treasures were made from every possible material such as lamb skin, straw, crocheted cotton, wood, plastic, recycled sailed cloth, woven leather, textile, mesh, nylon, sequins, ivory, wooden beads embroidered, horse hair, felt, stainless steel and more.
Designs came in all shades, shapes and sizes beyond my imagination. They were absolutely exquisite and rare pieces. 500 years of history worth!
The collection also included modern well-known exemplar from luxury brands like Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta , Mulberry, Fendi, Prada and Michael Kors. Absolute bags heaven, ladies!

It all started out when Hendrikje and her husband Heinz Ivo bought a leather tortoise shell cover handbag while visiting a small English village. The exquisite bag ignited their curiosities that led to further research. Fascinated by its origin dated 1820, it became a passion purchasing and collecting more handbags. Their private collection slowly grew over the years into 3000 bags. In 1996, the couple opened their home in Amstelveen to visitors showcasing two rooms full of their beloved acquisition.
A new chapter started in 2007 when their exceptional collection was relocated to the former 17th century mayor’s residence right here in Amsterdam. The patrician house were renovated befitting its purpose.

The museum visit consisted of two upper floors with connecting rooms filled with bags, purses and etc. Short explanations were provided in both Dutch and English. I took advantage of the ‘treasure hunt / speurtocht’ (only in Dutch) to keep my kids engaged. We learnt about the first bag, oldest bag and their role through past centuries. I pointed to them a particular buckle bag with 18 secret compartments and they were totally fascinated. Check out the cozy museum restaurant on ground floor which offers lunch. I heard about their fancy high tea session and hope to do this for special occasion next time around. Last but not least, take a look at the museum gift shop selection. Alluring!

It is one of only two (maybe three) such museum in the world. Certainly a must to visit if you are a fanatic or interested in fashion and design. Or just because it is a delightful change to the usual museum routine.

Note: The oldest bag in this museum is believed to be a man’s bag! So it is not just about the ladies …
