Alkmaar Cheese Market is not a real market!
It is just a show for tourists happening every Friday at 10 am till 12:30 pm during spring and summer months.
It is a grand presentation that includes a market filled with lots of cheese and hauling cheese carriers in traditional costumes. Reenactment of wholesalers and retailers are carried out to showcase the cheese trading scenario just like back in the day.
09:50: Welcoming the visitors
09:55: Introduction of the bell-ringer
10:00: The bell is rung and the market is opened
10:05 – 10:50: Verbal presentation to visitors, in Dutch, German, English and French or Spanish
10:50 – 11:15: Performance by the carillon
11:20 – 12:05: Verbal presentation to visitors, in Dutch, German, English and French or Spanish
12:15 – 12:45 : Performance by the carillon
12:30: Cheese Market closes
The city of Alkmaar is 40 minutes away from Amsterdam by train. It is about 20-25 minutes walk from Alkmaar train station to the Cheese Market located on Waagplein (translation: Weighing Square) right next to the Cheese Museum.
Be there early to position yourself. Thousands of tourists flood the city of Alkmaar for this occasion. This event is free and open to public.
